It is believed that language more than any other attribute distinguishes and defines what it is to be human.  In some African cultures a newborn child is a kuntu, a “thing” and only becomes a muntu or a “person” upon learning to speak i.e. learning to acquire language.

Speech and Language Services

We would like to welcome Loryssa Howard CCC-SLP to the Center.  Loryssa will be providing speech and language therapy in our office.  She is focusing this summer on providing speech and language therapy for students who have been receiving these services at school.  It is important that children receiving language therapy continue to receive these services during the summer otherwise they risk losing the gains they have made during the school year.  If you would like to continue therapy during the summer please contact our office.

She is also available for speech and language assessments for language delay, language impairment, and other language deficits.  She is also working with students who have social skill problems both individually or in a group setting.  If you would like more information on this service please contact the office.

Many insurance plans cover speech and language services, but since each insurance plan is unique, we will be happy to verify you child’s benefits.

The integration of language with self control is critical in scaffolding a child’s learning and the development of behavior.  Problems with language contribute significantly to learning disabilities and emotional disorders.

Language is  central to thought and to self reflection.  Disorders of language contribute to difficulties with self reflection and with moral development.  Language disorders result in children experiencing a world in which they chronically misunderstand what is expected of them and in which they are chronically misunderstood. .
